Guidelines for Considering Telecommuting Requests
for Librarians and Exempt Staff |
Granting an exception for a librarian or an exempt staff to telecommute is an infrequent, extraordinary action that must contribute to objectives of the Libraries as well as the employee’s interests.
This process should not be used when dealing with a one-time, infrequent, ad hoc schedule adjustment. These should be handled through the normal processes within the department.
|
Factors to Consider (prior to requesting or recommending a telecommuting exception) |
Does the nature of the work lend itself to telecommuting?
How will the department and the Libraries benefit from granting an exception to the employee to telecommute?
Will the arrangement negatively impact the department’s customer service?
Is direct supervision and/or daily communication with supervisor/co-workers required?
How can performance while telecommuting be monitored and/or documented?
Does the employee’s past performance suggest a successful telecommuting arrangement?
What will be the impact of the telecommuting on other employees?
Have arrangements have been made to have at-home work site appropriate for the work to be done?
|
Approval Process |
|
Period of Time |
The request must be for a specific period. Consider a pilot first of short duration, followed by a longer period of limited duration, subject to consideration for renewal
|
Work-Related Injuries |
When you have been approved for telecommuting, workers compensation will cover a work-related injury if it occurs in the home office
