Library Participation in the START Program (Staff and Academic Reduction in Time)
» Introduction
In June, 2008, the University of California Regents approved the START (Staff and Academic Reduction in Time) Program. This program is a voluntary reduction in time that allows campus units to accrue savings from any approved reduction in time. Beginning February 1, 2009 the Libraries will begin participation in the program.
» Criteria and Guidelines
The START Program allows eligible staff and academic personnel to volunteer to reduce their time and corresponding pay, while retaining vacation and sick leave, service credit, and retirement and other benefits at rates accrued prior to participation in the Program. In all cases, participation in the Program requires department head, Division AUL, and AUL of Administrative Services approval.
Please note: Not everyone who wants to participate in the Program will be approved. The Libraries will not reduce the amount or quality of its services nor will replacements be hired to "backfill" for participating staff. Department heads and AULs will take a close look at the workload impact the reduction will have on the rest of the staff in the department. Staff will not be allowed to participate in the START Program and the Libraries' Release Time Program simultaneously.
You may begin by filling out the following forms. Please forward completed forms to your immediate supervisor and then to your division AUL:
START contract [PDF] and START contract amendment [PDF]
